Though vague in his references of the Flame Imperishable, it is commonly interpretted as being the creative power by which Iluvatar (Tolkien's god figure) first created the Ainur, the Holy Ones of whom Iluvatar says:
"... I have kindled you with the Flame Imperishable, ye shall show forth your powers in adorning this theme, each with his own thoughts and devices...."
In doing so the Ainur created together in harmony a great music in the Void, the theme of Iluvatar which pleased Him as it was without flaw, but eventually one of the Ainur, Melkor (Sauron's mentor) began to weave into the music things of his own imagining that were not in accordance with the theme of Iluvatar. Often alone Melkor, impatient at the emptiness of the Void and Iluvatar's neglect to fill it, searched the Void for the Flame Imperishable to increase his own power and glory.
"Yet he found not the Fire, for it was with Iluvatar. But being alone he had begun to conceive thoughts of his own unlike those of his brethren."
Later the Flame Imperishable was sent into the Void where it is inferred that it became the core around which Middle-earth is created:
"And I will send forth into the Void the Flame Imperishable, and it shall be at the heart of the World, and the World shall be...."
